How it works

From appointment to report

1. A short appointment

Around 10 to 15 minutes in our private consultation room. We ask a few questions about the mole, such as how long you have had it and whether it has changed, then take magnified, medical-grade images with a dermatoscope.

2. Consultant dermatologist review

Your images are sent securely through Map My Mole to a UK consultant dermatologist who specialises in skin conditions and skin cancer. They assess each mole individually.

3. Your written report

You receive a clear report explaining whether each mole looks harmless or needs further attention, and exactly what to do next. Most reports arrive within 24 to 48 hours.

4. Clear next steps

If the dermatologist recommends further investigation, take the report to your GP. We will make sure you understand it before you leave the conversation.

How quickly will I hear back?

Monday to Thursday appointments

Most reports come back within 24 to 48 hours, and many sooner.

Friday, weekend and bank holidays

Reports are likely to take longer. Images taken on a Friday, or in the run-up to a bank holiday, may not be reviewed until the following working day. If you want the quickest result, book earlier in the week.

Turnaround times are typical rather than guaranteed, because reports are written by consultant dermatologists outside the pharmacy. We will tell you when you are likely to hear back when you book.

Is it right for me?

Who the service is suitable for

What the clinic will be for

  • A new mole, especially if you are over 30
  • A mole that has changed in size, shape or colour
  • A mole with an irregular edge or more than one colour
  • A mole that looks different from your others
  • A mole that itches, crusts or feels different
  • Simply wanting peace of mind about a specific mark

Worth considering if you

  • Have fair skin, or burn easily in the sun
  • Have a lot of moles
  • Have a history of sunburn or sunbed use
  • Have a personal or family history of skin cancer
  • Work outdoors or spend a lot of time in the sun

When to see your GP or seek urgent care instead

  • The mole is bleeding heavily, very painful, or looks infected (red, swollen, weeping or hot)
  • It is on the genitals, inside the mouth, on or near the eye, or under a nail
  • You want a full-body skin check rather than a check of specific moles
  • You are worried about a child's mole

If a mole is changing quickly, your GP can refer you urgently through the NHS. A mole check here does not replace that route; it gives you a fast specialist opinion if you want one.

Your options

How a pharmacy mole check compares

There is more than one way to get a mole looked at. Here is an honest comparison, so you can choose what suits you.

A pharmacy mole check is best for one or a few specific moles you are concerned about. If you want every mole on your body examined, a full-body check with a dermatologist is the better choice.

Common questions

Mole check FAQs

How much does a mole check cost?
£60 for the first mole and £30 for each additional mole checked at the same appointment. For example, two moles cost £90 and three moles cost £120. The price includes taking the images, the consultant dermatologist's review and your written report.
How quickly will I get my results?
Most reports come back within 24 to 48 hours of your appointment. Reports are reviewed by UK consultant dermatologists, so appointments on a Friday, at the weekend or just before a bank holiday usually take longer. If timing matters to you, a Monday to Thursday appointment is usually the quickest route.
Who carries out the check?
Our pharmacy team takes high-quality magnified images of your mole using a medical dermatoscope attached to a smartphone, and asks you a few questions about it. The images are sent securely through Map My Mole to a UK consultant dermatologist, who reviews them and writes your report.
Is this a diagnosis?
It is a specialist assessment rather than a full diagnosis. The dermatologist will tell you whether the mole looks harmless or needs further attention, and what to do next. Only a biopsy can confirm skin cancer, so if anything looks concerning the report will advise you to see your GP or a specialist, and you can take the report with you.
What happens if the dermatologist is concerned?
Your report will explain the recommended next step, such as seeing your GP for a referral. Take the report to your GP appointment and tell them a UK consultant dermatologist has already assessed the lesion. We will also make sure you understand what the report says and what to do.
Who is the service suitable for?
Adults with one or a few specific moles or skin marks they want checked: a new mole, one that has changed in size, shape or colour, one that looks different from your others, or one you simply want peace of mind about. It is particularly worth considering if you have fair skin, many moles, a history of sunburn, or a personal or family history of skin cancer.
When is the service not suitable?
Please see your GP or seek urgent care instead if the mole is bleeding heavily, very painful, or looks infected, or if it is on the genitals, inside the mouth, on or near the eye, or under a nail. The service is also designed for individual moles you are concerned about rather than a full-body skin check. If you are worried about a child's mole, please speak to your GP.
How long does the appointment take?
Usually around 10 to 15 minutes, depending on how many moles are being checked. Please avoid wearing fake tan, make-up or creams over the area on the day.
Do I need to see my GP first?
No. You can arrange a mole check directly with us without a GP referral.
When does the service start?
Our mole check clinic launches in November 2026 at our Chudleigh branch. Appointments cannot be booked before then, but you are very welcome to register your interest on 01626 854977 and we will contact you as soon as booking opens.
How do I book?
From November 2026, call us on 01626 854977 or pop into the pharmacy on Old Exeter Street. Appointments will be subject to availability, and the service is available at our Chudleigh branch.
I am worried about a mole now, before you launch. What should I do?
Please speak to your GP rather than waiting for us to open. If a mole is changing quickly, bleeding, or looks different from your others, your GP can refer you urgently through the NHS, and suspected skin cancer is fast-tracked.
What happens to my photos?
Your images and answers are uploaded securely through the Map My Mole system for the dermatologist's review and are handled in line with UK GDPR. Images are not kept on the pharmacy's device after your appointment.
The mole check service is delivered with Map My Mole, whose reports are written by UK consultant dermatologists. For general information on moles and when to get one checked, see the NHS guide to moles.
